Kützow

Smilla's Sense of Snow

Kützow, the Kronos’s engineer, is a technically capable but unreliable member of the ship’s crew. His sharpness surfaces intermittently through heavy drinking, and the same episode that reveals his skill at tracing a concealed electrical fault shows the limit of that competence: when Smilla is stranded outside his office window, he sees her and refuses to help.

A Drunken Encounter

When Smilla encounters Kützow at close range, he is enormously drunk. His eyes bulge, and he recognizes her by name as she faces him with a screwdriver pointed between his eyes. The scene makes his physical vulnerability immediate, while his intoxication distinguishes his condition from an ordinary illness.

Technical Competence

After the Kronos loses power while docked, with part of the harbor area also affected, Kützow investigates the cause. He traces the outage to a darning needle driven into the ship’s main supply cable and broken off, apparently using insulated pliers. Because the needle’s insulation contracts around it, the fault is difficult to locate without the right tools and a clear idea of what to seek; Kützow uses a magnet and voltage sensor to find it.

The sabotage is more than a routine electrical failure: the ship’s circuit breakers make ordinary interference with individual outlets difficult, so the culprit has gone directly to the main feeder. Kützow’s investigation shows that, during the brief periods when he is sober, he can be observant and resourceful. The discovery also links the blackout to Bernard Jakkelsen, who apparently used the disruption to disobey orders and leave the Kronos. A telegram received the next morning carries Jakkelsen’s resignation.

Refusal at the Window

Later, while Smilla climbs the ship’s rain- and salt-slick outer structure, she reaches the windows of the promenade deck and pounds on the glass for help. The window belongs to the engineer’s office. Kützow cautiously parts the blue curtains, presses his face close to the glass to shield it from the reflection, and sees her only inches away. Smilla screams for help; Kützow looks at her and draws the curtains shut.

His refusal stands in stark contrast to his earlier ability to identify a hidden fault. He can recognize a problem and act effectively when it is technical, but when a person in immediate danger appeals to him, he withdraws behind the curtain. The scene makes his office window a boundary between seeing and responding: Kützow has witnessed Smilla’s peril, yet leaves her to continue climbing alone.

Role Aboard the Kronos

Kützow is present again on the bridge after Smilla makes her way upward. He appears in a bathrobe and barefoot, facing Maurice as Smilla passes them and enters the bridge. The brief appearance places him amid the ship’s unfolding crisis without suggesting that he intervenes in it. Across these episodes, his defining tension is between intermittent ingenuity and consequential passivity: he can uncover what has gone wrong aboard the Kronos, but his clearest personal choice is to turn away from someone asking for help.
